Éric Montalbetti, compositeur
Né en 1968, vit et travaille à Paris
« Une musique dense, joueuse et coruscante » (Marie-Aude Roux, Le Monde), « traversée par un art affiné de l’orchestration et par une richesse harmonique séduisante » (Rocco Zacheo, La Tribune de Genève). Depuis une dizaine d’années, Éric Montalbetti a publié plus d'une trentaine de partitions créées par quelques merveilleux interprètes.
Avec orchestre, la pianiste Beatrice Rana a donné en 2025 la création d'un Concertino pour piano & orchestre en hommage à Luciano Berio à Paris avec l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France & Matthias Pintscher, aussi bien qu’à Rome avec l’Orchestra dell’Academia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia & Jakub Hrůša.
La saison précédente a vu la création de la pièce concertante pour violoncelle Nachtgebet avec successivement Tanja Tetzlaff, l'Orchestre Symphonique d'Odense & Pierre Bleuse au Danemark, Alban Gerhardt, l'Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège & Lionel Bringuier en Belgique, et Truls Mørk, l'Orchestre National de Lyon & Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider en France, ainsi qu’un Concertino pour clarinette & orchestre à cordes par Pierre Génisson avec les Cameristi della Scala, et Miséricorde pour orchestre à cordes commandé par l’Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne et Renaud Capuçon.
À la Philharmonie de Paris, Mikko Franck a dirigé Ouverture philharmonique, co-commande de Radio France et du Gürzenich Orchester Köln qui l'a enregistré sous la direction de Duncan Ward, puis Matthias Pintscher a créé Cavernes & Soleils sur des poèmes d'Andrée Chedid avec la mezzo-soprano Christina Daletska, commande de l’Ensemble intercontemporain.
Le festival Printemps des Arts a commandé pour l’Orchestre Phillharmonique de Monte Carlo & Kazuki Yamada la fantaisie symphonique Éclair physionomique inspirée par Paul Klee, reprise depuis par Pierre-André Valade et l’Orchestre de la Tonhalle de Zürich.
De son côté, l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande a créé sous la direction de Jonathan Nott le concerto Memento vivere avec Emmanuel Pahud en soliste à Genève, Lugano et la Seine Musicale.
Pierre Bleuse a aussi créé à Genève la sinfonietta Fenêtres simultanées sur la ville inspirée par l’œuvre colorée de Sonia & Robert Delaunay, co-commande du Lemanic Modern Ensemble et du Tokyo Sinfonietta dont le directeur musical Yasuaki Itakura a repris la partition avec trois orchestres différents au Japon.
En musique de chambre, le violoniste Christian Tetzlaff a créé un Duo pour violon & piano et donné la création allemande de la Sonate pour violon seul qui avait déjà été interprétée en France par Tedi Papavrami et David Grimal. Les violoncellistes Marc Coppey, Henri Demarquette, Xavier Phillips ou Sung-Won Yang, les vents Emmanuel Pahud, Jean-Louis Capezzali, Viola Wilmsen, Nicolas Baldeyrou, Pierre Génisson ou David Guerrier, l’accordéoniste Fanny Vicens et les pianistes Momo Kodama, François-Frédéric Guy, Kiveli Doerken ou Enrico Pace, ainsi que les solistes de l'Ensemble intercontemporain Hae Sun Kang, Eric-Maria Couturier et Hidéki Nagano, le Quatuor Les Dissonances ou le Quatuor Mona ont créé de nombreuses partitions, du Muziekgebouw d’Amsterdam à Tongyeong en Corée et Tokyo au Japon, en passant par le Konzerthaus de Vienne, le festival Enescu à Bucarest, le festival de Radio France à Montpellier, le festival Spannungen ou la Pierre Boulez Saal de Berlin.
Eric Montalbetti compose depuis l’âge de 11 ans, parallèlement à l’étude du piano et de l’orgue. Il a suivi les leçons de Pierre Boulez au Collège de France et à l’Ircam, et étudié avec les compositeurs Alain Bancquart, George Benjamin, Michaël Levinas, Magnus Lindberg, Philippe Manoury, Paul Méfano et Tristan Murail.
Directeur artistique de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France de 1996 à 2014, il ne publie sa musique que depuis 2015, à la fois aux éditions Durand, Allegretto et Lacroch'.
De nombreuses radios publiques comme France Musique, BBC radio 3 en Grande-Bretagne, Deutschlandfunk et WDR en Allemagne, RTS Radio Suisse Romande, RTBF Musiq3 en Belgique, Netherlands Radio aux Pays-Bas, DR au Danemark, RAI Radio 3 en Italie, RTP au Portugal aussi bien que la NHK au Japon et Arte.tv ont diffusé plusieurs concerts et enregistrements.
Au disque chez Alpha Classics, après Solos, a personal diary in music puis Chamber music, Harmonieuses Dissonances, vient de paraître en 2025 le nouvel album Orchestral pictures.

In the last ten years, Eric Montalbetti has been enjoying hearing over 30 scores come to life and reach audiences thanks to wonderful performers.
2026 will see the premiere of Fragments for a Mass for contralto, tenor, choir & orchestra with Zanda Švēde, Cyrille Dubois and the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra & Choir conducted by Andris Poga.
With orchestra, pianist Beatrice Rana premiered in 2025 a Concertino for piano & orchestra with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France & Matthias Pintscher in Paris festival Présences, as well as in Roma with the Orchestra dell' Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia & Jakub Hrůša.

Orchestre de la Suisse Romande & Jonathan Nott commissioned the concerto Memento vivere for Emmanuel Pahud and played it in Geneva, Lugano & La Seine Musicale. Also in Geneva, Pierre Bleuse premiered the sinfonietta Fenêtres simultanées sur la ville after Sonia & Robert Delaunay with the Lemanic Modern Ensemble, a co-commission of the Tokyo Sinfonietta and its music director Yasuaki Itakura, who conducted the piece with three different orchestras in Japan.
In chamber music, violinist Christian Tetzlaff gave the world premiere of a Duo for violin and piano as well as the German premiere of a Sonata for solo violin first performed by David Grimal and recorded by Tedi Papavrami.
Cellist Marc Coppey recorded the suite Un herbier pour la vie, revived in concert by Henri Demarquette who also commissioned Psalterium for cello & choir. Sung-Won Yang & Enrico Pace also played 3 Impromptus.
Pianist Momo Kodama premiered 6 Intermezzi for piano in Paris, Tokyo and Nagoya. François-Frédéric Guy premiered in the Amsterdam Muziekgebouw as well as in Tongyeong (Korea) 3 studies after Kandinsky, also performed in Germany by Kiveli Doerken.
The soloists of the Ensemble intercontemporain Hae Sun Kang, Eric-Maria Couturier & Hidéki Nagano recorded a Trio, and Les Dissonances the String Quartet "Harmonieuses Dissonances", which was also revived by the Mona Quartet, as well as in the Lumières d’Europe Academy at Bucharest Enescu festival and at the International Music Seminar in Prussia Cove and Falmouth (U.K.) on Steven Isserlis's invitation.
Among winds, flutist Emmanuel Pahud premiered the solo piece Memento Emmanuaile from the Wiener Konzerthaus and Berlin Pierre Boulez Saal to France, Italy, Slovenia and Tokyo Opera City. Oboists Jean-Louis Capezzali and Viola Wilmsen played Esprit tendre, clarinetists Nicolas Baldeyrou and Pierre Génisson the Formants pour clarinette, and David Guerrier Prière de l’Ange gardien for solo horn.
Pierre Génisson and Delphine Haidan also premiered Hommage à Matisse for clarinet and female voice on the painter’s 150th anniversary in the museum in his birthplace as well as in Nice.
Eric started composing in his childhood while studying piano and organ. He followed the lectures by Pierre Boulez at Ircam and Collège de France, and studied with composers Alain Bancquart, George Benjamin, Michael Levinas, Magnus Lindberg, Philippe Manoury, Paul Méfano and Tristan Murail.
Also the Artistic Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France from 1996 to 2014, he only started to publish his music in 2015 with Durand, Allegretto and Lacroch'.
Many public radios including France Musique, BBC radio 3, Deutschlandfunk, WDR, Nederlands radio, DR in Denmark, RTBF in Belgium, RTS Radio Suisse Romande, RAI Radio3, RTP in Portugal or the NHK in Japan as well as Arte Concerts have already broadcasted various concerts and recordings.
Alpha Classics has also released 3 CD albums : Solos – a personal diary in music (2016) ; Chamber music – Harmonieuses Dissonances (2020) and Orchestral pictures (2025).
